I used the sawdust mix you suggested. It worked very well for me....as you can see the new canes are bigger than the parents.

Fantastic! Yours looks really great! I have not seen one of the yellow type around here, yet. Hopefully, one of these days...
My 'Jem' doesn't look as if it will bloom. It is healthy, healthy roots, had full sun all summer, plenty of water and fertilizer and seemed very happy but I still have green leaves and no sign of a spike. No idea what I am doing wrong. :|

Have patience, maybe the cane is still busy gathering energy to produce spikes. As long as you gave it proper rest=it will bring forth flowers.
