Cycnoches question Female
Default Cycnoches question

I recently received my first cycnoches. I have read conflicting information regarding the male/female issue. Is it the male or female that has the most colorful blooms? Which does bright light produce and which does shade?

Male flowers are usually more desirable and darker conditions typically give male flowers, though this is more of a guideline and not an absolute rule. Sometimes you can get female flowers in dark conditions and male flowers in bright conditions, depending on the health and age of the plant. Growing your plants in dark conditions, however, is not good because you will get weaker plants. I grow mine as bright as they can take it and then when I see a spike starting to form I will move the plant into a darker area or just take some tinfoil and gently cover the emerging spike to make think its in the dark.
