Repotting Gongora
Hello there. I just purchased 2 gongoras and I received them in those plastic baskets. However, I'd like to re-pot them into vanda baskets.
Is this advisable? Do all gongoras have to grow in those black baskets? can they grow in Vanda baskets as well?
Also, how often do you water them? what is the medium that yours are potted in? thanks.

Any pics? I have several Gongoras, most of which are in the long plastic roots. The only one that is in a wood basket is actually languishing a bit! They seem to really like those longer, plastic baskets. You could probably try planting them in clay pots and hanging those if your worried about the "look" of the plastic ones. All of mine are also planted in spagnum moss and I water mine everyday.

Thanks for your response. Do you use pure moss or do you mix it with something else?

Mine is in a wood slat basket in moss , doing well, just got done blooming , but if you use the basket be sure to pot high enough so the spikes go over the edge and are not trapped .. gin

I have a Gongora charonitis that I received in plastic pot. It flowered and is growing a new shoot. The leaves have brown tips and spots, so I don't know if I am watering it correctly or not. Should they be allowed to dry somewhat after watering? It is not potted in spagnum moss.

I will attempt to attach a picture. The plant sits in a Southwest window that has a bush outside the window. In the winter when the sun slants very low, the orchid doesn't get very direct light. It bloomed this Spring. I have been watering it less as I didn't know if I was over watering it. I fertilize with MSU half strength every other watering. This is the first time I have uploaded a photo, so I hope this works out.

I think that the leaf tips are dry because of a lack of water. These guys should never be completely dry before receiving
more water. Also, since they are such moisture loving creatures, I would plant this one in a basket of some sort with spag. Even though they are moisture loving plants, they still need airflow around the roots. The best way to achieve this is with a basket or maybe a clay pot, IMO. I would also be sure to plant it in spagnum moss in the new basket. Unless your plant is in a sauna, bark is too dry for them when planted in a basket. Im not sure what the spot are from as Ive never experienced that problem where I grow.

Thank you for the advice. I will try to get it into a basket soon as it has new growth starting now.
