Default Portagee Star “Brian L Sunrise” x Ivaneae “Purple Fantasy”

Picked this up last year from the SVO offering. This is the first bloom, I’m a bit underwhelmed by the blooms. I’m not sure I’m going to keep this one in my collection.

Does it have both male and female parts? Looks like it might.

I’m not really familiar enough with plant anatomy to be able to tell.

The petals and sepals are extremely thick, and held in a way that resembles female flowers. But the top photo clearly shows a column and pollen triggers. That's what made me wonder.

Definitely look like male flowers to me. There are some that just do have that "cupped" look. Looked at photos of ivaneae, seems to be dominant here. (Ctsm planiceps males look from a distance just like females, you have to really get close to see the triggers..., much more "puzzling" )

The lip is great...just wish the petals had opened up more.

It's pretty cool looking! Just needs to open wider.

It would be interesting to see what other cultivars from this seed capsule look like. I'm guessing that was the effect that Ctsm. Portagee Star parent might have been hoped for. Fred is always trying new things. The cross has been named: Ctsm. Joseito's Backlit Phoenix (was registered by someone other than Fred) Wonder if Fred will try breeding it on to try for wider-open flowers. It's a lovely color combination.

It took about 5 days total, but they finally opened all the way.

I’ll probably divide it when it goes dormant. Let me know if you’d be up for a trade for backbulbs.
