Has anyone ever tried growing Stanhopeas by mounting them to the outside of a basket? I grow mine mounted to trees and palms and would imagine that doing that would avoid the problems that might arise from the flower shoot having to burrow down through the media and the basket on its way out. Then you could also fill the basket with more durable media like bark mixed with some moss for moisture retention.
Mine is currently in a 5" net pot very similar to yours with large grade bark and perlite, and a 1-inch layer of sphagnum on the bottom to keep it all from falling through the holes. Since repotting, it has 3 new growths and roots poking out the bottom, so it seems ok.
