List of bulbos and their respective spikes vs growths
Ok so im not sure how well this post is going to work considering how unpopular the genus bulbophyllum is but id really like to get a thread going about each species/hybrid and their growths(pseudobulb vs flower spike)any input would be much appreciated as im extremely curious as a novice orchid/bulbophyllum enthusiast and grower and so far i have had no spikes as far as i know on any of my bulbos. I think ill get us started with a question. This is my bulbophyllum lilacinum. I have three growth, are they bulbs, or flower spikes?

I have no idea, my bulbos keep giving me growth and not spike. But wanted to say bulbos are so beautiful and weird and funny and amazing- I love them
My guess- first photo might be a spike. Second one- I guess growth.
Have no idea- but if you look at them, the growth will extend and look more like the stem (rizome?). The first one seems to already have a rizome to the next bulb? No? Maybe a growth aswell.
Hope you get both👍🏻
And hope someone who have flowered these can answer☺️

I'm guessing spike because of the lack of segments and the upwards-curving, horn-like shape. That's what my medusae does. Also I feel like spikes have a brownish-yellowish color where the new growths are somewhat darker.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that Bulbophyllums are unpopular. They are quite popular with many orchid growers. However, you are not likely to see them in your local grocery or big box store. Perhaps what you meant is less commonly grown?
The growths I see in your photos could be either spikes or new leaf/pseudobulb growths. IME, spikes tend to be more cylindrical, less flattened. Spikes tend to elongate rapidly, often with a "beaked" appearance at the end of the growth.

Thanks guys i hope youre right🙂 I think the photo with the one pseudobulb might be a spike based on your opinion and the second with the two pseudobulbs might be bulbs because the single bulb photo is short and beaked and grows relatively quick compared to the other two pseudobulbs growths who are long, cylindrical, and pointy not beaked😕

Heres a photo i just took of a perfect view of the three growths and as you can see the bottom two are different from the top🙂

According to OrchidWiz, the lilacinaum most often blooms around Oct. and Nov, so it could be a spike at this time of year. Good luck.
