Default Fly in my bulbophyllum echinolabium

I finally got to see fly pollination first hand with my bulbo echinolabium. I heard a fly buzzing as I got close to my bulbo. To my surprise I found he was stuck between the hinged lip and the pollinia, so I went to get my camera. This was the first day this bloom had opened, the day is humid and overcast, and the conditions seem to make the flower produce more odor. normally I would have to be real close to smell them, today I could cmell them from 2' away. I'm glad that I got to see this, but the little bugger did successfully remove the pollinia essentially killing my flower the day it opened.

The fly was stuck real good in there. It was in there before I even got to the plant so I don't know how long it was stuck. I had time to go get my camera and take a bunch of photos. I can account for him being stuck at least 1 minute.

That is the coolest thing ever.

You should get in touch with a major publication, that is some National Geographic shit right there.

By the way, I don't think the flower will wilt unless it receives pollen, am I wrong?

Well now that we see that this plant has a natural pollinator in Puerto Rico, I guess it's time to establish a new colony

Can't tell you how much I appreciate the photos and story behind them!

Depends on the plant. In some species the flower will wilt after removal of the pollinia. In others removal of the pollinia has no effect and the flower will naturally wilt after the usual amount of time. Most will wilt shortly after they are pollinated however... their purpose is fulfilled in that case and the plant can divert nutrients to growing seed instead of maintaining the flower.

Very cool picture. Was it a Green Fly?
If it is, they are known for laying eggs into dead/necrotic tissue and used in forensics to determine how long a body has been dead.
