Not a root or a flower spike, what is it?

A few weeks ago, this...thing started coming out of my phal, I assumed it was a flower spike since this particular phal currently has 3 spikes so I thought "a fourth spike, awesome!"

Fast forward to now and it's stopped growing and it neither a root (has not grown and the shape is too large and rounded) nor a spike (not mitten shaped). Any thoughts on what it could be?

A spike or root that's breaking through the base of that leaf.

DONT TOUCH IT!!! It will emerge or it won't. Nothing you do will be likely to help it, and will most likely break it.

The third photo would appear to show that it was a trapped spike that is now emerging above the leaf (left side).
