Thank Linnaeus for the species....classical taxonomy stuff. All biologicals have a genus and species name, Cattleya intermediata, an orchid found in Brasil (National plant IIRC). The hierarchy starts with Kingdom and divides from there down to the species and in some instances variety.
Hybrids could be loosly defined as the GMO of the orchids (or other things). Sometimes it works as shown by Optimist and the BLC. hybrid...sometimes it doesn't like the Raphano-Brassica cross done in the '60s in an attempt to create a plant hybrid of the radish and cabbage.
