Default Orchids in garden soil?

Can any orchids grow in regular garden soil? I'm talking plain old dirt. No humus or anything. Just dirt that you grow tomatoes in (minus fertilizer, I never fertilize and I don't know why.)

Asking because I'd like to add a little orchid-ness to my front/back yard

It depends on your climate. Do you have a strong wet/dry monsoonal climate? Many Habenaria have a growth pattern like that.

I second rbarata on Bletilla striata. My mother grew them in heavy clay, my sister grows them in almost gravel and I grow them potted with all sorts of material mixed in (whatever I had at the time). Lots of sun in all cases.

Thanks for all the answers but doesn't bletilla have a dormancy period? I can't give a dormancy period outside.

My climate is the rainy/dry climate.

Bletilla rest is: drop its leaves and the bulbs remain under the medium. Basically, the plant disapears until next spring.

Look into various Habenaria, Eulophia, Oeceoclades, Calanthe and Phaius.
