Amusing. Usually it's the "Offerdahl" part that throws people. My first name is John.

First time poster here :-)

I received a beautiful Phal as a gift from a client back in late July. The tag said "just add ice" but the logical part of my brain refused to believe putting ice on a tropical plant is a good idea, so I began to research orchid care before I even took the dang thing home!

What I learned was that Phals planted in bark benefit from being run under a lukewarm tap (provided your drinking water doesn't have a lot of minerals and chlorine in it) for 15 to 30 seconds to thoroughly wet the medium and help flush out the mineral salts that accumulate. Drain for a few minutes and put back into the cache pot.

Ah! That sounded much more logical to me and so I proceeded and all has been well.

But. You knew there had to be a "but," right?

That darned orchid is so beautiful (it's an "enhanced" variety from Westerlay) that I spent quite a bit of time looking at it each day and got the feeling he was lonely, being the only orchid in the house, and, well, somehow I managed to acquire 14 friends for him! Yes, it looks like a "him." :-)

Some of his friends were planted in sphagnum, which I know will grow mold in my area in Oregon, so I bought some bark, some slotted orchid pots and began to re-pot them. What I found was a real mess! One plant had almost no roots - they were all rotted mush, but I'm not one to give up, so it's now propped up in a proper pot with bark and is growing new roots like crazy - I must have gotten it right. Every one of the plants in moss had rotted roots and I may lose one soon, but I'm not giving up on it.

Oh, dear. I sound a bit deranged, don't I? Is this Orchid Fever? I mean, I haven't started buying orchids online except for those two little seedlings - it's not like the house is full of orchids or anything...yet...

I'm afraid you've caught it. The disease is properly called O.A.D.

Sphagnum is difficult to grow in, and seems especially so for Phals. If used, it's best to pot it in very open pots, preferably basket pots.

Put your ice cubes into your drinks, where they belong.

Orchid Acquisition Disorder?

Is there a cure that doesn't involve building a greenhouse and taking on a second job? :-)

You have room for a chair in your greenhouse? Clearly there's space for more orchids

Some people move up from orchids to even more expensive plants.

Haha. I know a few people that have paid > $100 for a little plant and I know one particular hobby where that happens...

I have a mild case of OAD, not too severe, but I dont think that will be the case for long since the online orchid seller just restocked on lots of cool orchids and like 5 new ones popped up

The things that block my OAD are parents and other plant hobbies...

Concerning about the original topic, I've heard another orchid myth: "Never move orchids, they take forever to adapt to slight changes". Surely it's okay to move my paph and oncidium to a better location a couple metres away?

Yeah, of course you can move them, but the HUGE danger in moving is to risk putting them in a brighter spot where they get too much sun, or forgetting that in the new position, what is fine in the am turns into death valley as the sun moves round.

Moving great distances anecdotally can cause problems , but short distances no, as long as you remember where the sun tracks.
