Den Phal pleated growths - underwatered?
The newest growths on one of my Den Phals look kind of pleated like this:
Is this a sign that it needs more water? Or are some Den Phals naturally like this? I water it the same as my other Den Phals, but it's a LOT bigger and in a faster-drying medium (gravel as opposed to red lava rock). It has lots of new root growth on it and otherwise looks really healthy.

Could be a lack of sufficient humidity, or insufficient water due to underwatering or a damaged root system. Check for the last first.

Thanks Ray. The roots appear to be fine - it's put out more new roots this spring/summer than ever before. Gonna try upping the humidity a bit, see if that helps.

Mine looks like this, and it's from chronic under-watering.

Actually, it doesn't look over, or under watered to me. It appears like some of mine do when I am not careful with the fertilizer, and sometimes I have more than other times. So, more likely uneven fertilization. It doesn't seem stressed to me.

Hmm... Its fertiliser schedule is pretty regular, I fertilise it weakly every other week, and I'm careful to measure the amount I'm adding. So I don't think it's that, but thanks for the idea.

a couple of mine have pleats, which I assume was from underwatering, but the folds go ACROSS the leaves, so I don't think yours is underwatered.

Interesting - I have that on a couple of my oncidium and rhynchostele, never seen cross ways pleating on a den phal, though.
