For the granular, I've looked into it further on forums and they say that the granular has lots of irregular bits in it so that you don't know how much of each nutrient you're actually getting, with posts from several people mentioning their plants were getting burned...I only have one window with about 20 or so orchids, so I hadn't taken the suggestion to make a huge batch (in order for it to be more evenly distributed) as that would be quite cumbersome in my small apartment.
