This flower was a present for my last birthday . Does anybody know if this is an orchid ?

Yes. Its known as a Jewel Orchid. Botanical name is Ludisia discolor.

Yes, Ludisia discolor. Mine seems to like a layer of African violet potting mix, half the depth of the pot, over a layer of faster-draining material (mix of bark and Styrofoam chunks). They like low light, similar to Phalaenopsis, with tolerance of even lower light.
