Hi Gail! I understand your confusion about s/h! Many growers use these materials because they are inert...I guess that's what you would call them. The material does not break down/decompose, thus giving a grower lots of control over what kind of nutrients and when.

When you look at some pictures of orchids, their pots look like there are little pebbles or cocoa-puff looking balls as the medium in the pot. These "pebbles" are a form of semi-hydroponic material. Totally check out Ray's site...he has helpful info!
