Default Old Spike, New Keiki?

I forgot to cut off the spike on my Den. kingianum last year in April and this summer a keiki formed. Is this normal?
And can i do this with all of my other hard cane Den. with a spike? Would love to propagate this NoId Dendrobium I got

I have found that Kingis do interesting things with spikes and keikis - I've had what remained of spikes after I cut them start to grow roots ... I've gotten "speikis" (appears to be just a spike, but starts growing roots, and gets new growth); keikis that bloom well before they are fully developed ...
So, I'd say it's not very unusual.

I've only grown a couple of den-phal types, and haven't noticed them doing the same, but they do get keikis on them.
