I have this one orchid (phalaenopsis) where a bunch of my roots are shrivelling up.

It is only the second one I ever repotted and I'm not sure the orchid mix (bark, coal, and those funny little white rock things) was packed tightly enough around some of the roots. I also think some of the roots that had originally been in the sphagnum moss before I repotted may have ended up in the open air.

Is this really unhealthy for the orchid? Is this happening because it's not getting enough water?
Any thoughts I on how I can help keep this guy happy?

Some roots die because of the change in media, others die because they are old. My experience with exposed roots is that they die when I can't provide the right humidity levels that they require so they shrivel and die.

It's natural for some of the roots to dry up when you switch from sphagnum to bark. The roots aren't adapted to the dryer environment and will eventually die. You don't need to worry as the orchid should put out new roots soon. I usually recommend adding a layer of sphagnum moss on top of the bark to keep some moisture around the roots.
