Does Trader Joe's sell masdevallias? - Orchid Board

Hey folks!

I have seen here and there around the internet that some people have nabbed a masdie from TJ's.

Could it be? Is this true?

If so, I'd be really interested because I always want to buy dirt cheap "throwaway" orchids before I try to buy more expensive ones in any given genera.

I've been doing almost weekly orchid hunting for the last 8-9 months at local stores, but I have yet to see what the full year offers. For example, you see more den nobiles through winter and spring than other times of the year (as far as I can tell).

Have any of you seen a masdevallia at TJs recently (within the last year) and if so, when?

I have NEVER seen Masdies at TJ's. Doesn't mean they haven't shown up on occasion.

I think you see more Den nobiles in the fall because that is the time they flower. When do masdevallias flower? You might check then.

I've never seen any at TJ stores here in San Francisco. For one thing, they're not very forgiving of unfavorable environments, and if they aren't kept moist they'll croak pretty quickly.
