Need pictures showing whole plant or leaves

Hi there MamaLiberty, you can't be very far from me. I'm in Buffalo WY. I'm not so good at this orchid growing but getting a bit better. You now have 6 posts so I think you can post pictures.

Once you find out what you have and how to take better care of them you will have better luck. It has taken me awhile but I am saving a few and one phal that I almost killed and has never bloomed for me is just starting to spike. I think I have had this thing for well over 6 years.

I know, I know that's bad hehehe and it's suppose to just be a white phal. I don't care I'm supper exited.

I do have some blc crossed with other Cat types but have not gotten them to bloom yet. They are growing so I have hope. I also have a B. David Sanders but it is doing just ok and has not bloomed.

YAY! Buffalo is about 150 miles from here in Newcastle, but in Wyoming mileage, that's just next door. LOL

Not able to add a picture yet.. or maybe just don't know how. Will go looking for clues and come back if I figure it out.

If anyone can direct me to a tutorial, I'd appreciate it. This forum software works very differently than what I'm used to.

You got that right, not to far away. My sister use to live in Newcastle many years ago. I haven't been there for awhile. It's so nice to see someone from Wyoming on here, there is a guy from Billings that's the closest and now your here .

You will figure it out, I did. I am not sure how many pictures you tried to upload but when I use the manage attachments I can only do so many at a time. Not sure why but it seems that when I first started I could do more.

Now I can only do 2 or 3 at a time. I just load them then I can go back in and load some more. Then I post them and they come through. I'm sure that made no sense.

I have never tried to do an album, guess I should.

Finally figured out what the problem was. Had to turn off the adblock and then could upload photos. I'm not much of a photographer, but you can see most of my plants in bloom. I'm going to try hard to get better pictures this year.

Welcome to Orchid Board. Here is a link to a sticky on posting photos: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ng-photos.html You have more than 5 posts, so it should be no problem. The pictures have to be fairly small files. Once you post a photo of the plant, people here should be able to tell you what genus it belongs to.

As for the Cattleya hybrid. It would be a standard Cattleya requiring general Cattleya culture. That would be fairly high light, good chunky open potting mix and allowing it to dry briefly between watering. I like medium bark, clear pots with good amount of holes in them. And never over pot them as root rot can occur. Other people will have other preferences for potting methods, but so long as it is open and the roots can breathe, you can use what suits you.

Yes, thank you! I found the tutorial and created an album. The "manage attachments" and "browse" buttons do not work for me, however, so I will try again next time I visit this forum. Time to do something else just now.

I suspect that the medium I have in that pot is too dense, and will use a larger size bark the next time I repot it. I will see if the most recent new growth will produce a spike first, since it looks promising. Just installed a light above the orchids that have not bloomed, and we'll see how that helps too.

Having so much fun learning lots and lots of new things and will experiment cautiously. I've had some of these babies for 20 years.

The more I look at this, the more I think that the problem of overpotting isn't the diameter of the pot, it's the depth.

To me, the art of growing an epiphyte is in finding a balance between what the plant needs, and what you need. Ideally, an epiphyte should be grown naked on bark/wood and moistened regularly. However most of us don't want to be moistening the damn things every 5 minutes. So, we pot them to extend the times between waterings. Now a small pot works just fine, provided it is packed with chunks of bark so that it can drain quickly and retain moisture but not too much. However the down side is that if the plant is happy and grows well, it will need to be repotted quite frequently, and they don't like that much. Some Catts will sulk for a year if you don't repot at EXACTLY the right time of year.
So what's to do? My experiment this year will be to repot Catts as they need it into large, sloping trays a couple of inches deep. I hope that this will allow them to grow for many years without disturbance, while keeping some moisture, but also keeping them free from moisture induced rot.

I think that orchid sellers are missing out. What we need are large diameter pots, say 25 to 45 cm in diameter, but only 10 cm deep.

It's best to re-pot when the orchid is putting out new roots. Otherwise they may not adapt to the new potting medium. So wait till its got new roots just starting. Of course if any plant is failing and you suspect root rot, then you need to deal with it ASAP. Good luck with getting them to bloom.
