Hi, I recently bought a Zygopetalum and just wanted to confirm, now that its first flower spike is fading, where is best to cut it off?
Searching the Internet I've found that similar looking orchids with pseudo bulbs like the zygo get cut fairly low down leaving only about an inch of the spike left.
Yup just cut it off, it will not rebloom on that spike. It will grow a new pseudobulb where the new spike will come from. In my area it likes being watered a lot, our area being very dry.
I always cut as low as I can. Often the spike is coming up through the leaves so I cut just above the point where it comes out of the leaves, later those leaves will die back and I then cut it further when I can get lower down without damaging leaves.
