Pleione Confusa culture?
Default Pleione Confusa culture?

I attended the OSWP (Pittsburgh) orchid show today with a friend and I thought I was going to escape without bringing home yet another orchid but then I saw the Pleione Confusa sitting on a vendor's table and I ended up bringing it home. It was an impulse buy and I know nothing about it. The vendor laughed when I worried the bloom would be affected by the cold and explained that it likes the cold. I discovered that it also likes shade. Does anyone else in zone 5 (or lower) grow these? Do you put them in the refrigerator in the winter? Do you begin watering them when they are in bud or do you wait until they are done blooming? Any other advice? There isn't as much information online as I had hoped to find so I am really hoping that others who grow this or have information can help me.
Thanks!

Never mind, I just found the information I needed. Looks as though these are ridiculously easy to grow!

I don't grow this one, but find other Pleione's really easy.

One thing that was noted on another forum recently is that they don't seem to like it if you don't repot them over the winter. I tried my first ones in the same medium the second year, and both struggled and deteriorated (and I lost them). The ones I've had since then I remove them from the pot when they go dormant and store dry over the winter, then pot back up in fresh medium when they are just starting to show signs of growth (usually Feb for me). I've had good success with them doing that.

Thanks for the tip! I couldn't remember everything the vendor told me about them but now that you have reminded me, she did tell me to take them out of the pot when the leaves dropped and to re-pot them just before spring.
I noticed while looking for information that most of the vendors are over your way with a few in Canada. I'm surprised that they aren't more popular here.
Thanks again!

Yeah, not sure why they are not so popular over there. I've started taking part in a UK based orchid forum and they are really popular on there, lots and lots of pictures of them recently.

I had never heard of them until I saw the little pot at the show with the picture of the bloom. They only had the one type, too. I usually collect only fragrant orchids but I could really start collecting these (if they were more easily available). They are really pretty, especially when there are enough to group them. I am going to look for these in garden centers and anywhere else...just in case.

I got mine at POE in San Francisco in February as an impulse buy, and I am glad I did. They bloomed beautifully. I figure I will sort of treat them as I would daffodil bulbs. Dig the up, wait for spring and replant them. Any comments?
