Hi all you new addicts....er....collectors out there.
Thought you might like to see what you will see when your oncidium/brassia/beallara, ect start new growth. This may occur on one side or both depending on how well and healthy your plant is. This is also why you do not want your plants to stay wet as water getting down into the sheaths and sitting for awhile can rot the new growth. Oncids have very fine numerous roots that rot easily. The problem you may run into is that the area under the pseudobulbs where the roots are most numerous stays wet where fungal and bacterial rot starts to grow. Be careful of your watering and good air flow through the root zone is a must especially in humid areas. Here's what the new growth will look like. This is putting out a spike at the moment. The best time to repot oncids is when the new growth starts putting out roots and these are 1"- 2" long. These roots are very fragile so be careful. Pot with the oldest pbulbs up against the outside of the pot edge so the plant stays in the pot the longest.
