No, I am sure this is not "FredClarkeara After Dark". Go to this website to see your orchid.

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Your orchid is a very common species. "FredClarkeara After Dark" is a very expensive mix. It is in the family of Catasetinae.

Probably the closest to a "true" black is FredClarkeara After Dark:

Hi Dawn

The picture you originally posted is Encyclia cochleta now known as Prosthecea cochleata, which is a species.

The FredClarkeara 'After Dark' is a totally different orchid which is a hybrid meaning it is not a plant found in nature but was created by a hybridizer.

Fredclarkeara After Dark
Parentage is: (Mormodia Painted Desert x Catasetum Donna Wise)

The reason I said "the closest to it" is because I don't think there is such a thing as a black pigment in orchids.

I have not seen it in person, but After Dark is probably very highly pigmented with red and blue pigments, making it so dark purple it looks to be a true black.

As an aside, it is not nice to paste others' images in forums or websites without getting permission to do so.

I apologize, I figured if you were able to paste someone elses link, it was OK to add their picture to it. My Bad!

That's okay, Dawn...you're just learning your way around

Unfortunately, some unethical folks search for perfect photos on the internet and use them to portray something they have for sale on an auction site. It's misleading and not a very nice thing to do.

I know that Susanne. I have ship sculpted orchids to Japan for contest plus used my photos for ads in the US.

I know the difference.
