Fellow beginner here...
Unfortunately I couldn't open your picture. DISCLAIMER: I'm a amateur hobbyist myself but I know a teeny bit!
From what I understand the roots should be firm and plump, and a light green color. As I couldn't see your picture, I would say not to give up on it until you absolutely know it's dead! Go ahead and repot it and be careful not to over-water (my problem).
But I also wanted to suggest you go to Youtube and watch some videos about Orchid care and repotting. I did this yesterday as I'm having some problems myself (I too received an Orchid after my brother passed (my condolences for your loss) and have kept it alive for two years but is now in rough shape, again). I would advise watching videos from people who have greenhouses, a good reputation, and some credibility with respect to their Orchid knowledge. Seeing the videos can teach you a lot and provide you with some much needed visuals, in addition to visiting here.
How is it doing by the way?
Best of luck,
Lotis
