Orchids...please "Light" my way!
Question Orchids...please "Light" my way!

Er, sorry for the slightly cheap title...my query is to do with selecting orchids in relation to lighting conditions...

The current research* I've done suggests that there are 3 different light categories for orchids:

1. Low
2. Medium
3. High

But, how do you judge this for where you live? And what bearing does this have if you decide to grow your orchids indoors or outdoors?

For example, what sort of conditions would Low light be...since everywhere gets low light (when it's night time) and everywhere gets medium light (when it's day time)...and only England doesn't get high light, because it's raining all the time! (note to the UK tourist board: "just kidding")

_______
Graham.

Default Well, think about it a little

If you grow indoors, you don't really have to worry about it, if you are using some type of artificial light. However, that can impact your choices unless you can afford H.I.D. lighting and have a big enough space for it. Otherwise, you have to use something like fluorescents, and you are restricted to plants that don't like high lights, because you cannot give it to them. I would almost bet that you are going to be restricted to growing inside, simply because where you live will not allow you to give the "high light" orchids enough light. If you want to grow them, you will probably have a big layout of cash for an H.I.D. setup. JMO.

Graham, since you in a colder climate like me and many others on the board, then indoor would be the main area you grow in. I do grow some of my orchids outside, though my this time is short, only a couple of months - that's not alot. But it helps and they love it, when they're not being chewed on

Anyways ... I do grow high light plants under Flora tubes & a few CFL's they do well for me.

You need to figured out how much space you have, grow room is important, since many orchids can get to be sizable.
Your lights will depend on what your attracted to growing

Light is probably one of the easiest conditions to manipulate any way you like. I'd be more concerned with high/low temps and high/low humidity. I'm guessing you'll have better luck with cool to intermediate growers rather than hot growers. Shakkai is in the UK and can probably give you a better idea of what will do well in your area. I'd guess many of the species dens, pleurothallids, and phals would be fine.
