It's official, it's a spike on Paph. wardii
My Paph. wardii had a growth spurt and now there is no doubt about it being a spike!

Congrat!!!
I have a cross of wardii 'glenn' and a maudiae type. The bud is really dark, and so are the leaves. I like dark paphs.
The pattern on the leaves are strongly influenced by wardii, which is new to me, but I find it attractive. kind of like a tropical snake skin almost.
I can't wait to see it open!!! I would love to see yours in bloom as well of course.
