Thank goodness orchids don't smell like this!!

P.S. - I'm trying to figure out whether I'm brave enough to go smell this thing when it opens..O_O!
That's really cool! Thanks for sharing that! If it were me, (if I were closer Lol) I would go see it, these guys don't seem to flower that often, & you never kno, you might not have another chance! And if it stinks too bad, you can always leave (or run Lol)

Lorna, you should get into collecting species, a lot of them are fragrant, and then you'll have an excuse to buy more orchids... and we all know they get sad if any are left out...

Hahaha, I feel like the words "putrid" and "stench" and "pungent" are just......really deterring. I'm almost afraid I might vomit, though someone suggested I bring vicks vapo rub in my purse to put under my nose if it's awful.

Oh Eeeewww.

I last saw this thing about 7 years ago when I also lived in North Carolina! Really don't think I could go smell it either. I reckon it's something you'd not forget in a hurry.

Good Luck Sug.

North Carolina, eh? What part? I've got family in Greenville and Lake Gaston.

So are you originally from here, then, or from the UK and were just visiting for a spell? You don't have to answer, I'm just curious.

Please go see it. I think you'll be glad you did. It's still a pretty rare occurrence, it's a definite sight to behold, and the smell isn't THAT bad. People tend to exaggerate. I don't want to mislead you - it stinks seriously. But it's not an eye-watering, nausea-inducing stench like some others, and the smell of most Amorphophallus sort of comes and goes, so there are some times when it's only a lower-level background stink. I grow a lot of stinky aroids, but I've only been able to see one A. titanum in flower. Mine is very small and years away from doing anything.

I just might. I'm planning a trip up there soon and dragging my fiance along with me (I know he's going to be so bored looking at flowers, but I'm bored looking at planes in the Air and Space museum for the 9000th time in my life, so it's a trade), so I may be able to see it when it blooms...you know, if I can elbow my way through all of the other onlookers, haha!

I am from the UK originally. I went over to North Carolina to get married. I lived there for seven years untill I got sick and had to come home. Glad to be home now although I miss the Sunshine.

Cool! I've never been that far south in NC except when driving through on my way to Florida.

I hope you have gotten better. Sunshine is nice, but it's overrated sometimes :P!

I know where Smithfield is! We drive thru there (well, technically around it) on the way to the Outer Banks for the summer! I'm from Salisbury (born & raised, moved away, then back... etc) it's about 2 hours from Raliegh, halfway btwn Greensboro & Charlotte... Small world, isn't it?

*Salisbury, NC, Lol, forgot I'm talking to someone from the UK, & someone in Maryland! (we always called it "Smallsbury" Lol)

I agree w/ Steve! Go see the stinky flower! Vicks vapor-rub is a good idea, I'd forgotten that trick
