Bad Phal

So I am going to re pot my mom's phal that just has a couple leaves and at some point had the crown rotted. I am hoping to put it in the same pot but how much air space does it need in it's Just add ice container? I am thinking sense I have been reading that I may put it in another outer pot that has more air movement.

Anywho do you think it will grow again? I have had one myself that did that when I must have gotten water in the crown. It does have good looking roots. But I have no reason why?
