Is my new phal suffocating? Female
Default Is my new phal suffocating?

Hi everyone! Today i bought a new beauty. Leafs look green and strong, one leaf was cracked and brused so i trimmed it off and sealed the cut with powder cinnamon.

Now my question is about the moss they packed this beauty with. Its pretty tight, however from what i can see the roots look good. I also cut extra holes for air circulation as there was only one on the bottom. What do you all think? Should i wait for the blooms to fall before repotting? Or get that baby in some bark asap?!

As per usual I have attached a picture below. Thank you

All orchids i've bought come tightly packed. It's not too horrible if the plant looks healthy. I waited for my blooms to finish and then i repotted, it didn't hurt the plant one bit. If you see a lot of rot though that's when you should re-pot asap. You could still re-pot yours if you want but you might loose the blooms.

The orchid is really beautiful. Do you have the name? It will do good if you cut slits in the pot that way the circulation is more even. Mos tends to stay wet in the middle so i wont wait too long after the blooms have fallen off to re pot

Those are dyed blue.
The next blooming will be white.
But they use a marvelous white phal foot this so your next blooming should be pretty spectacular.

my experience with tightly-packed moss hasn't been good, so if it were me, I'd repot in a mixture of moss and bark, keeping the moss away from the middle where the moisture stays. my experience is also that my mom gave me hers, and she didn't know what to do with it. it had been a few years since it had been repotted, and it was planted in a pot that you couldn't see the roots at all. if the place you got it from knows what they're doing, that plant is probably in far better shape than the one I acquired was. it certainly looks a lot healthier from what little I can see
just mind that the tightly-packed moss is going to hold moisture really well. you might not need to water it but once every two weeks. get out a pencil or stake and gauge the moisture, for sure!
