About your orchids sitting in water... If it works for you and your plants are healthy, just keep doing what you are doing, even if it seems contrary to some advice you've heard. You also should experiment with things.
About the see through pots... Phals don't have to be in clear pots, but I like to put them in clear pots because then the roots can photosynthesize and the roots seem to stay in the pot more. You'll probably get algae but that's ok. It doesn't seem to hurt the plants at all. I like to put all my orchids in clear pots, I even make pots out of bottles, medicine containers, and cups, as long as it is rigid platic and clear. I'll cut it to the height I want and then burn holes in the bottom with a very, very hot nail.
