Can I save this Keiki?!?!? Female
Default Can I save this Keiki?!?!?

I am new to orchid growing and my mother inlaw gave me an orchid she got for mother;s day. It is a small phalaenopsis. The "mother plant" and stem have died and the keiki started on the dead flower stem. Everything I have read says it needs to stay on the mother plant until it has a couple if leaves and roots. It has been about 4 months since it sprouted two leaves and only one root has started with them. The stem is dried and about the size of a tooth pick, is the keiki getting the water it needs from the dried stem? what can I do to give this little guy a fighting chance? I really have no Idea what I am doing, PLEASE HELP

If the flower stem has died then the keiki is not getting moisture through it. If it only has one small root, the chances are it won't survive, but there's always a small possibility. Mist the keiki once or twice a day until you decide what to do. It needs to be in a humid environment. The sphag in a bag method may work for you although I've never done it. I'm sure you can find the instructions somewhere on this forum. I believe its just wet sphagnum in a zip lock bag with the plant. You may also what to consider just getting rid of it and buying a healthy orchid.
