Orchid623 it's so hard not to touch them.....guilty here lol. Now it the best time to get some growth as yours has finished blooming. It should start growing from one of the eyes at the base of the last blooming pbulb. You won't get any new roots til that starts happening, just watch not to over-water and you should be fine, if you find top is really dry just mist the top of the mix. It really doesn't look too bad, I think you've got more than a fighting chance with that one. Again goodluck and if you have any questions feel free to ask!

Also taking some mix away won't hurt, just make sure that the orchid is secure in it's pot, not wobbling around or roots will not grow. The tips will keep breaking off. Put a stick down into mix and secure the plant with it if you have to
