I was thinking about the theory behind getting air to the center of the pot. When you plant a phal, it will not grow new roots from under the medium. All new roots will come from the main stem above the medium. They usually run across the top of the medium until they hit the side of the pot. Then they grow down between the inside of the pot and the medium. When you repot you will notice all the roots around the outside. That leaves lots of medium in the center with no roots to absorb the moisture or air to dry the medium. That results in the bottom of the main stem staying wet and eventually rotting. By using very small pots, or by using and upside down net pot, the interior medium can dry and help prevent the rot. Good luck.
