Phal with many Kei Kei's
Default Phal with many Kei Kei's

I was given a phal with a terminal spike. I kept caring for it after the flowers were done in hopes it would put out a kei kei from the bottom somewhere because I read that if it made one on the flower spike it would probably have the same issue.

The plant has spent the summer outside on the porch and has produced a whole cluster of kei kei's from the base. Now I don't know what to do with it. Do I just let them keep growing and hope that eventually one or two have roots and can be repotted? Should I thin out some? It's such a tight cluster right now that I haven't really been able to tell just exactly how many there are.

Usually basal keikis are just left as is. It is usually hard to separate them without damaging the plants.

I would just leave them be and let them grow.

Yes, let them grow. I have a P. equestris that has so many basal keikis I can never tell which is the main plant ! The plus side is that it puts out many spikes each season !

Should I eventually cut the old plant off? Since it had a terminal spike it doesn't have any center leaf so it no longer grows.

It will use up the energy in the leaves that won't grow anymore. They will dry up and drop off. I would leave it and throw away the leaves as they drop off.

The same thing happened to one of my phals. It had a terminal spike and developed several keikis. I just left it alone and let it grow. The mother plant eventually lost all it's leaves but I didn't remove the main stem because the keikies were growing from it. Three of the keikies have become quite large and the plant looks great and puts on quite a show when it blooms. I'm just going to let it continue to grow as it is. Good luck with yours.

I concur with everyone else, leave it be. I would love to see pictures of it now and then down the road, how it has progressed.
