Here's a thought...

You might be able to put the fungus on the pencil under the microscope just for fun and see what it is.

That would be intresting... I just have no idea of where I could get a microscope.
But thanks again for all the very interesting and very useful information. I left the pencil out and I still can't see any sign of the fungus on the roots or the bark that are visible. I guess I'll just keep it a little dryer for a while and hope for the best. It seems to be going well... even after the repotting and all this the buds have not blasted and the roots are looking good.
