Default new dendrobium

So I went to Home Depot looking for one thing and ended up buying this den.

I'm worried. The base of this stem looks thin compared to the top. Also, I should repot. I was thinking about bark, moss and coco. Is this okay?

Would the same size pot be okay? I bought a clay pot about the same size.

Any thoughts?

nice! I don't have much experience with this type of Den, but I think the canes look normal.

I think most Dens like to be a bit cramped in their pots - use whatever size pot that fits the roots best - I'd wait til blooms are finished before repotting

it looks like a nobile type dendrobium...they like bright light and during the winter no fertilizer and a little less water plus cool nights...I keep mine near a window left open a crack so it gets a really good cool down

It's normal for them to look that way. The roots look dehydrated though. These guys are in active growth right now so I re-pot at this time of the year. Likely it won't hurt the blooms.

I like s/h personally and nobile type Dens do great in s/h and they like to have tightly packed roots in s/h pots.

Good luck and nice choice!

I've seen many people posting about semi-hydroponics, but I've never actually considered it. More out of fear of screwing up. I wouldn't know where to go or even how to start. Maybe in the summer when I have more time I'll read up on it.
