Help spike on Phalaenopsis stuartiana var. nobilis x Sedirea japonica turning yellow Male
Default Help spike on Phalaenopsis stuartiana var. nobilis x Sedirea japonica turning yellow

I recently potted (Feb. 13) this little one in spagnum because it was basically bare roots when I bought it from the vendor. I tried to be very careful so as to not disturb the roots too much, but now I've noticed that all but two of the buds on the spike have blasted, two have continued to grow, but now the spike has started to turn yellow , starting at the tip. What can I do to save the two buds that are still developing ? Should I cut part of the spike that is now yellow? Thank you in advance.

Probably can't do anything for the spike. I wouldn't cut it.

Have you checked what's happening to the roots?

Maybe it's time to move it out of the sphag.

Sphagnum can be a very wet medium. I don't see any drainage or aeration holes on the sides or bottom. If the plant was nearly bare root, it was probably acclimated to a high humidity environment with rapid drying of the roots - or they were aerial roots adapted to being exposed.

At this point the orchid has to try to adapt to a new environment, and will probably drop the rest of the buds because it is shocked. Make sure that you avoid overwatering. Be especially careful until new root growth is present.

Thanks for the advise. The pot currently has drainage holes at the bottom, but not on its sides, and from what I can see some roots are actively growing, although I think I might have potted it too tight in a pot that might be a little bit too big for its roots. I will carefully inspect the roots and repot the plant in a smaller pot. I'll post pictures if and when it flowers. Thanks again.
