I read that too (and personally love that book). I don't have enough time/experience in the game to have an opinion, but it seems like it was an old media that has essentially been rediscovered through renewable resources and is currently the "new, It thing". I'm guessing the author was using media from the original sources.
I did buy a bag and I personally found it turned to mud in my pots over time. Now, I don't know if that was just the quality that I purchased or my culture. I currently mostly use it as a topper for sphagnum. I also have a tree fern boards that are used for mounts. Plants grow very well on it and it seems very sturdy. As with everything it's an experiment and so I'm keeping my eyes on it with that book in mind.
