I find my Vanda to be my easiest and most rewarding orchid. I've had it for 9 years or so, and as long as I give it plenty of light, etc, it blooms realiably. I've been thinking about trying the vase culture, but I like to save space by hanging some of my plants.
You guys might think I'm off the wall ... but if you can't find moss I would get some of the carpet padding and shred it apart some and wrap like the moss. I read an article recently and the guy was using it in pots as a medium and so far has had success. Time will tell. It does not break down and still lets air in, the roots grow through it and holds slight moisture. That is next on my list to try with some problem chids.
That's an interesting idea. It isn't very pretty, though. That is one thing that I think about with water culture. A jar full of green slime wouldn't be too pretty for displaying in your living room. Putting it in a cashe pot could kill the algae, which is supposed to benefit the plants
