Default Cymbidium Help Required by Newbie--Is this a flower spike?

Hi everyone! Pardon me if I make a few mistakes at first, because this is my first post!

Last year I bought a cymbidium from Walmart, I thought, oh...what the heck, even if it flowers for a month, I am still going to be ahead if it dies.

Well, it didn't die(!), spent a nice summer outside on my deck and now has been back inside by my sunniest window (south facing). The tag says: "Pearl-Balkis 'The Bride.'"

I'm not sure, but I think there is a flower spike! I've attached a picture of the inflorescence (which was somewhat tatty, taken april 8th 2010) and the pseudobulbs at the bottom (taken yesterday), the growth which I think is a spike, reminds me of a gladiolus and is about 6-7 inches long.

Any thoughts and help, encouragement even would be appreciated!

Welcome to the Orchid Board, with over 16,000 members someone always has an answer. I don't grow this one, but there is also a thread for each type, even one for Cymbidiums, be sure to check them out, they might even have some pics of spikes.. Lots of good information through the various posts. Enjoy!

Are you referring to the growth in the middle of the plant? That looks like a spike to me. Any photo of the tip of that growth?
