The new pictures sure tell a different story.

I'm with Becky on the probability that the roots are bad. Another clue as to how old the media is is the height of the plant above the media. You don't want to plant it too low, but this one looks to be an inch or two above the medium.
Depending on what you find during the repot it might be a simple recovery (if you have a couple of good roots), or a very prolonged one (if most everything is gone). How you proceed will depend on what you find.
