LOL, I hear you - it's hard not to check everyday!

What? You're NOT supposed to check each and everyone of your orchids everyday? I must not have gotten the memo.

Mind you, that's what I like about having a small collection, you can spend a little time each day to unwind with each them. If it go too big, I'd miss the individual attention-giving I think

....

Having said that, my dad has bet me that my numbers will have doubled by this time next year .... shall I even try to prove him wrong?!

rangiku 11-22-2010 01:47 PM

May I suggest you stay away from compots if you don't want to lose your bet? But, would it really be that bad a bet to lose? I am sure you would be able to find time to spend with each of them as you do now.

Tee hee, I was also trying to argue that keikis wouldn't count, but I'm not sure I won :) No, it wouldn't be a bad bet to lose (- but if I get lots for Christmas, my birthday and Easter, I'll be very suspicious of his motives!)

Hi Jennyfleur,

I didn't read the whole thread, cold weather may stimulate the plant to grow roots. It's always exciting to see a new plant growing off one of the existing orchids.

Thanks Tim :) Now we're coming up for a cold snap here, the temp drops at night will be even more (since we don't have the heating on all night) - let's see if it does the trick!

I keep my orchids outside so they get acclimated to the cold as winter approaches. I have left mine out to temps in the 40's(farenheit) & it sure seems to help the phals develop flower spikes & last year I had a bunch of kiekis grow off the flower stems.

So many responses! And all I can say is much the same as the others-- time will tell. Also, if you can give the plant a definite change of season (keeping the room cooler at night etc), you'll see activity in the plant as a whole and likely in the keiki.

Hi Guys,
Well, my Phals get a pretty good night-drop anyway as they are in south facing room which is also heated during the day and has no heating at night, so they generally 'perform' well. My last resort (re. temp drop) would be to pop her in the kitchen, which does get very cold overnight ( - it's what I do with my coelogyne).

As you can see with the original picture, she's growing a new leaf which is over half way to full size now, so it might be the case that she doesn't want to do two things at once - I'll keep y'all posted if there's any change and thanks again for all your input!
