HELP HELP !! weird looking things on catasetum
Default HELP HELP !! weird looking things on catasetum

i saw this new structure growing from the base of my catasetum bulb which initially i thought it was a new bulb but now i am not so sure about this anymore.
a spike would't be as big in diameter as this and if it is a new bulb, it should have a cup like structure...this one had some weird white structure in it...any guess....really different from other spike or bulbs that i had before.
and by the way, i was told this was a susan fusch by the vendor but when i post it up in net, someone told me that is does not looks like susan fusch because of the diferent labellum. any help? thx

Well it looks to me like a new bulb but maybe one that is going to flower straight away? I don't know this type of orchid so I can only guess. RosieC coined a name when talking about dendrobiums. They sometimes produce keiki-like growths that then become a flower spike, she called them a spikey (mix of spike and keiki). I've had a number of them on my dens, start off looking as if they are going to be a keiki with roots and all. Then they just turn into a flower spike. When they finish flowering I've taken them off and try to strike them but they don't produce any new growths.

As the new growth matures please post more pics, I'm sure we'd all be very keen to see what it turns into!

The flower is beautiful.

Thanks
Marion

your growth is a new bulb.

It is unusual for new growth after flowering but a good sign.

Catasetum grow like a perennial dying back each winter to start anew each spring. Since it is still early in the year for flowers you may get additional flowers later on this new growth.

thanks for the complements for the flowers. i just saw a root at the bottom of the shoot, so it must be a new shoot. but the funny thing is the center structure (i presume it is the young leaves) is white and not green. can't wait to see what happen next...thanks again

update.....two more pic.
this really puzzles me...a spike should not have roots right?
and a new bulb should be green at the tip and also the tip is somehow in flattened manner and not rounded.
well this had both in between, a root underneath and off white tip that is rounded.
