Help me Identify my Orchids Please =)
Default Help me Identify my Orchids Please =)

I just received 3 orchids my mother drove me back from FL.

I know the tall orchid with several blossoms is a phalaenopsis. The flower stalk is very crooked, to the point it's going to end up toppling over one of these days if I don't prop it against something...any suggestions? Also, in one of the pics, the outter edge of one of the leaves looks unhealthy. Any ideas on how to help it?

Next, is another orchid that has blossomed, but I have no idea what it is.

Lastly, is the "freebie with purchase" orchid. I really have no clue about this one, other than it needs a new pot stat. I haven't a clue what's involved in repotting an orchid, rocks/mulch?

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

It's kind of hard to see details because your photos are kind of small, but here goes.

It does look like something funky is going on with your Phal leaf. If it were mine I'd cut off the leaf tip with a fresh razor blade. Just cut it straight across about an inch above the damage and then dab some regular cinnamon powder on the exposed wound. The cinnamon will help to seal the cut and fight infection.

You don't want your Phal to topple over so sit the plastic pot into something nearly the same size but heavier, like a terracotta pot. This will help short term, but in the near future it would be wise to check out what's going on with your roots. Sometimes newly purchased plants are growing in rotten media. There may also be rotten roots. If so, cut off any rotten roots, treat them with cinnamon, and repot your plant into fresh media. Be sure to use a pot and medium especially designed for orchids and avoid overhead watering. You can either dunk the pot in water or carefully water the media. Avoid watering those leaves or you could get a fatal case of crown rot.

Your last two plants look like Cattleyas. It's difficult to tell from the size of the photo but the leaves on the very last plant look like they may have been exposed to too much sun. Cattleyas like bright light but direct mid-day sun exposure can give them a sun burn. Tissue damage from sunburn is permanent but I don't recommend cutting off the leaves. Leave them on the plant. If the injury is too severe the leaves will eventually yellow and drop off on their own. Let your plant decide when to let go.

Just a note...My observations may not be accurate due to the small pictures. Larger pictures are very beneficial when trying to diagnose a problem. Good Luck.

One thing you can do to keep your phal from tipping over is to set the pot it's in inside of a clay pot. It's how I keep mine from falling down.
Not sure what's going on with the leaf though. Have you checked the roots yet? What type of media is it potted in? Sometimes if the roots are starting to rot it can affect the leaves.

The other 2 orchids look like Cattleya hybrids. Maybe one of the other members can be more specific than I can.

I would agree with what has already been said. It's a good idea to check the Phal roots. If you are unsure what to repot in check out the advise from our member Ray who has some great advice on his website. The reason is that different mediums suit different people/conditions. Many of us like Bark and find Sphag moss to cause probelems, but for other people the oposite is true.

I also agree that the second two look like something in the cattleya alliance but I can't be more acurate than that.
