Had to overpot Onc. Twinkle- doomed? Female
Exclamation Had to overpot Onc. Twinkle- doomed?

Well it turns out that my little Onc. Twinkle that has the 5 new growths had a MONSTER ROOT SYSTEM!
guess I should be happy about that...
Took a lot of swishing in water, gentle picking and help from a toothpick to clear it out, and even then I left some in that was super attached.

I had gotten a 3" slotted clear plastic pot for it, but as you can see from the picture, it would have been just as rootbound in that as it was in it's previous container. (tall skinny square pot, 2") Since I wanted to pot according to the root ball, I opted to go up in size.

The only other size orchid pot I had was a 4" of the same kind.

So I put some styrofoam peanuts, large bark, and wine corks in the bottom and piled in the center, and made do with what I had.

Am I SOL?
-kind of freaking out...-

If necessary, I can order a 2.5" pot that'll be here wednesday or thursday next week.

Should I just do the 3"? Do Oncs like to be really (I'm talking REALLY) potbound? it would still have room to grow in the 3".

attached are pics of the original container, roots before picking out everything, root system and such, halfway through repotting, and finished.

I'm starting to lean towards just taking it back out and putting it in the 3". I'll just have to trust that 'chids like to be potbound.

Yeah I probably would have done the same Izzie. It's tough that 4" pots are SO much bigger than 3" ones. Another thing I have done in cases like this is to put a small pot overturned inside the bigger pot.

Thanks Sonya, that's good to hear.

How should I water this now? I was thinking I would never soak it for fear of it not drying out fast enough.

Perhaps just pouring into the center?

I'd probably put a skewer in towards the center of the pot.

Yeah, not only that, but 3.5" round, clear, slotted pots are impossible to find.

Izzie, stop worrying. Twinkles grow so fast it will be out of that pot in less than a year! I think it looks perfect. Good job!
