Well it turns out that my little Onc. Twinkle that has the 5 new growths had a MONSTER ROOT SYSTEM!
guess I should be happy about that...
Took a lot of swishing in water, gentle picking and help from a toothpick to clear it out, and even then I left some in that was super attached.
I had gotten a 3" slotted clear plastic pot for it, but as you can see from the picture, it would have been just as rootbound in that as it was in it's previous container. (tall skinny square pot, 2") Since I wanted to pot according to the root ball, I opted to go up in size.
The only other size orchid pot I had was a 4" of the same kind.
So I put some styrofoam peanuts, large bark, and wine corks in the bottom and piled in the center, and made do with what I had.
Am I SOL?
-kind of freaking out...-
If necessary, I can order a 2.5" pot that'll be here wednesday or thursday next week.
Should I just do the 3"? Do Oncs like to be really (I'm talking REALLY) potbound? it would still have room to grow in the 3".
attached are pics of the original container, roots before picking out everything, root system and such, halfway through repotting, and finished.
