You could always use the excuse "It's benificial to the home environment and our/your/my mental health"
Not that any excuse is needed for acquiring new plants.
Sorry, just had to comment

LugiaLover, Aye, tis strange indeed
Jeffrey, Ok Sorry in advance for this one!
You could use the the charm/smarm approach to appease the wife.
"I'm trying to make this home more beautiful, as a tribute to my beautiful wife"
Expect rolling eyes and a walk away

She already thinks she is making the home more beautiful, she has fake flowers.. hahaha. So I keep all my real stuff in our room, ain't that something.
I pulled that plant and the roots look very good, I cut only 1 rotted root off and the rest were good, so I am clueless as to why the leaf fell off like that.

Fake flowers should be for clothes and peops with severe Hay-fever. But each to their own I suppose.
With regards to the Leaf. I have been thinking could it just be the result of a slight knock, which caused the join/seam to become weak and detach without sign of disease etc. The leaf being healthy, will then survive for an amount of time after detachment without any adverse signs.
I have seen people use square cut leaves for propagation purposes, as long as the cut leaf then gets the right conditions it will form into a new plant (not seen it with Orchids though).
Just a thought.
