Where to buy good coconut husk chips
Hi all,
I am debating with myself about the media I should use for my Phal, Den, and some Cymbidium. Right now, my Phals are in sphag, they are doing really well, but they are getting big. When I repot them to a bigger pot, the sphag seems to take longer to dry. I don't want them to have root rot. I think I want to try coconut husk chips. I don't find them anywhere from Lowes or Home Depot. I saw some online, but not sure if they are good.
Does anyone have a recommendation for what stores/online that have good CHC?
Thanks.
Thuy

How much do you want? I don't usually sell them, but I have several bales in the pole barn I could break up.

Hi Rob,
I am new to orchid. I am a windowsill grower. I have about 20 orchids of all kinds. I don't know how much I need. Probably a cubic foot?

Goofy is my logging name . You can address me as Thuy if you don't think Goofy sounds good. I am Vietnamese and you can find a few millions with the same name as me. Whenever I try my real name for a user account, no luck!

Goofy
You're very welcome, Thuy.
Your login name "Goofy" is fine....just felt a tad odd to say "Hi Goofy" to someone. (My login is often "brit6v".....now that IS strange lol)
Nice to meet you,
Vicki

i like kellys korner for potting materials.....i would think you would need only a half cu ft.....are you going to mix it with other mediums? i like to use a combo of bark, chc, diatomite, and charcoal.....varying the ingredients for diff plants....

I don't really know what/how much to mix for my media. I am thinking CHC, charcoal, perlite, a little bit of everything to make a good potion. I am still experimenting.

Goofy, the other thing to consider is trying to find someone close to home who might sell them because I have found that the shipping costs sometimes are more costly than the product you're purchasing!!!! I wanted to try Orchiata but the cost of shipping is almost 1 1/2 times the cost of the 50 L bag! Maybe someone in your orchid society could put together an order to help decrease overall costs. The other thing you must be cautious of is where the CHC came from and if they have been washed because they potentially could have lots of salt in them.
