They do not work well with the potting media used for many orchids.

Get yourself a package of wooden skewers at the supermarket. Simply insert them into the medium and wait between 5 to 10 minutes. Remove it and you'll know whether to water or not.

Orchids Limited is selling one designed specifically for orchids. I've never used it though. You can find it on this page: Orchid Equipment for Your Orchids.

It's called "MOMET".
