More root rot
Default More root rot

I repotted my Phal 8 days ago. The bloom was gone, just cut down the spike and I hadn't repotted since purchasing it. Wanted to see how the roots look. They weren't too bad. Decent amt of firm, green/yellow roots. Cut some off. Dipped the plant in a PHysan solution. Dusted with cinnamon. Repotted in a clear, slotted pot with sphag.

Today I looked at it to see if it needed watering. The sphag was still moist from 8 days ago. And I saw some root rot near the bottom. I took the plant out, cleaned it off and there was more root rot. The roots look way worst then they had last week. I cut more off and dusted with cinnamon. The roots looked really wet so now it's air dryign until I decide what to do.

Please help. The plant started off pretty good and now it's gotten a lot worst.

If it's growing in full on moss, I think that's where the majority of your problem lies.

I recommend changing it out to large grade bark. And if the roots are getting too dry, try putting a thin layer of moss on top.

Another recommendation is using a clear pot to see what's going on with the roots.

I'll throw out another couple of options you may want to try in the future.

1. Mounting them onto a piece of wood.

2. Semi-hydroponics.

If you have any questions regarding mounting your Phals feel free to ask.

Semi-hydroponics is not my expertise, I recommend you look into the Semi-hydroponics forum for more info on that method of growing.

Good luck.

take it out of moss....moss holds too much moisture for too long a period....use chunky bark for fully grown phals, or any chunky medium you desire....but dont water right after repotting...make sure you soak your medium for 24 hrs before using it, and pot the phal shaking the pot to settle the bark around the roots as you go....let it set a week before continuing to water as usual.....gl

Thanks for the replies. I repotted with an orchid bark mix. Also put a couple of popcorns in the pot. It's a clear slotted pot. Since I can view some of the roots, what do I do if I see more mushy black roots? Repot or let it be?

Keep the plant in a pot that is just big enough to fit the roots in. Nothing too big, and nothing that you have to squeeze the plant's roots into.

You may see more rot if the roots have been saturated for a while but the plant will start putting out new ones if your conditions are good. Let it be for a bit, don't overwater. If you see condensation on the inside of your pot, wait a day before watering.
Put it in a warm spot and let it adjust. It may appear that nothing's happening for a while, sometimes they kind of sulk after repotting.
