Value means very different things depending on who you speak to. I value my orchids a lot. But my favorite is a NOID and is worth a lot to me, even though it is likely worthless to a true collector.

I like my NoID's even though they are not identified. Generally for care of them you just need to know the genus or the 'type' within that (for example a Dendrobium Phalenopsis type).

But when I've got plants that have an ID then I'm very careful to keep those marked so that as my collection gets larger I don't loose the ID. (Currently I know them all on sight because I don't have that many, but I'm sure that won't last.)

It has also become more important to me to buy ones which have a correct ID. While I still love my NoIDs and will probably buy more, I intend that the majority will be identified plants in the future.

I heard a trick from some people who display their orchids at meetings or judged shows. Apparently the push in stake-type labels often get lost. So they put a label at the bottom of each pot as they repot. Should a label get lost...all is not lost.

That's a clever idea, putting it at the bottom of the pot! I meant to say that yes, I think all growers, novice and experts alike, should work hard to make sure all their orchids have names. I guess for some of those random phals you get from the big box stores, there's not much you can do about those bc they rarely have tags - but for the others that come from actual orchid vendors, those should ALL have tags. Imagine someday having this huge specimen plant you've had for years and years and not being able to show it at your society show because it doesn't have a tag!!! That would be terrible

I do have the plastic stakes with names from the vendors, and they aren't too bad. I would definitely prefer something more pretty, if there was a way to do that! A clear glass stake with a clear sticker label made on the label maker sounds really pretty to me! Especially if the font could be in some sort of pretty script or something - it would make the orchids seem very exotic

I like the idea of a label in the bottom in addition to staking..

Bingo-as soon as I get my camera back from wherever my three year old hid it, I will take and post a pic...!

Becky-my glass stake I prototyped was made with dichroic art glass and the name permanently fired into the glass stake. I like the idea of just plain glass stakes, too with room for labels. That way if something kicks the bucket (noooooooo!!!) you can re-use the stake by remaking a label. Very smart!!

Rosie-I agree that any future plants I buy will have id's.

Pilot--there is no value to great to place on true love! heh!

OMG! You make dichroic glass plant tags? I design and make jewelry. Can I use one of your plant tags as a pendant? I'll trade you a plant for a tag. I have some dichroic glass pendants set in sterling. I strung one of the pendants with various freshwater pearls and SS Bali beads. It is so cool.

oops- sorry. didn't mean to hijack the thread

Anyway, good luck with your orchids! When you find the camera (or when your 3 year old releases it from custody) please post pictures of your 'chids all decked out in their jewels.

Bingo- I am always open to trade...

I have been fusing glass for a little over four years now. I started off in jewelry (like most fusers do) and realized I had a serious glass addiction (and probably now an orchid addiction too--must be in my personality) so I got a much larger kiln and do alot of plates, platters, wall pieces in addition to jewelry.

I doubt at 7" long orchid marker would make a good pendant---but if that's what you want to do w/ it be my guest! LOL..... I do still make tons of jewelry in additon to my more "serious" artistic work.

Still can't find the camera-----yikes!
